Our History
How we started, evolved and where we are today.

The formation of the Steamboat Lake Association (SLA) grew from an informal discussion between long time lake neighbors Brian Ahren and Carol Kummer back in 2009. The first meeting of SLA was held at the Popple Bar, Laporte. Carol was appointed as acting President and Fred Boethin as Treasurer. Together they laid the groundwork for the Steamboat Lake Property Owners’ Association (SLPOA). This executive board authored the original By-Laws, organized meetings, worked on membership campaigns, and communicated with membership through the lake association’s Facebook page, created and managed by Kirk and Mimi Monger.
At the 2018 Spring meeting, Carol announced her desire to step down as president after serving in that capacity for nearly 10 years. She appointed Mike Jacobson as the new President based on his interest in the SLPOA from an informal meeting they attended with Carol, her husband Jim, and Marcel and Dianna Noyes at the Noyes’s home several weeks prior. Mike agreed to take on that role with the condition that Carol remain as Vice President during the transition. She agreed.
Since that first meeting, the board as seen some changes. In 2019, Mike Jacobson remained as President and Michelle Berry took on the new role of the Secretary. In 2022, Sandi Dummer took over the role of Treasurer and Mona Rauen stepped forward as the new Secretary after Michelle resigned and moved out of state. Mike Bryant, who had taken the lead promoting membership, volunteered in 2024 to become acting Vice President. He with the help of Jennifer Garrels have done an outstanding job streamlining our membership campaigns. In 2025, Kirk and Mimi Monger stepped up to become our new treasury team after Sandi’s resignation. In addition, Kirk and Mimi continue to manage our Facebook page and assist with our communication efforts. Our current SLA team is featured on this page below.
Everyone doesn’t always realize all that goes into organizing a state recognized non-profit lake association. There were a lot of pieces to this puzzle but with the dedication and hard work of the past and present executive board members and volunteer members of the Steamboat Lake Association, the SLA has had a positive impact in the preservation of our outstanding natural resource we all have come to love.
We still have much work to do. Look for exciting new initiatives and programs all steered toward the preservation of this beautiful lake. We encourage you to get involved by joining one of our volunteer teams, becoming a member, making a donation or partnering with us and becoming a Sponsor. Stay up to date with all things SLA through our newsletters and notices, website and Facebook page. Together we can strive to be great stewards of this lake and the surrounding watershed.
Hope to see you on the Lake!
